Condition: new. Tenniel, Sir John (illustrator). Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, by Lewis Carroll, was first published in 1865 by Macmillan & Co. In January 1864 Carroll met with the illustrator John Tenniel, and in Tenniel's hands, the characters of Wonderland came to life. Printing Tenniel's images in the first edition of the book involved careful preparation - the drawings were carved into woodblocks by wood engravers, and the blocks were used to create metal 'electrotypes' that would be used on the printing press. This fine art print (pack of 3) has been made using traditional methods of reproduction and printing. In 2014 Macmillan created a new set of reproductions from the original woodblocks, now held in the British Library. The printing has been done on a traditional 4-colour proofing press, printing directly onto art-quality paper. High quality print (pack of 3), reproduced from original John Tenniel material held in the Macmillan archive, and printed on art paper using modern techniques that faithfully capture the charm of the original. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Book
Condition: Fine. 16 colour prints housed in the original illustrated cardboard folder (22.6 x 15.8cm), blue ribbon-ties to leading edges. Prints in excellent condition. Folder heavily rubbed, edgewear, extremities bruised. Fine/ good- Originally published in 1911 for a volume featuring both Alice' s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass, "in 1979 the originals of these colour plates were discovered in Macmillan's archives and they are now reproduced again for the first time in over sixty years" (blurb). As of (re-)publication, a mystery remained: despite its inquiries, Macmillan could not discover who coloured the illustrations; whilst still painting in 1911, Tenniel's eyesight was very poor. The publisher invited readers to help.
