Hardcover. Condition: VG. Color-illustrated boards with black lettering. 279 pp. Mainly color illustrations. "Published to accompany the first large-scale retrospective of Alighiero Boetti's work outside Italy in over a decade, this volume presents the most comprehensive overview of the artist's career to date. Covering all periods of Boetti's broad oeuvre--including early sculptural experiments associated with Arte Povera, ephemeral Conceptual projects of the 1970s, and monumental embroideries and tapestries fabricated up to his death in 1994--this richly illustrated catalogue brings together leading international critics and curators, each examining a different aspect of Boetti's achievements, together helping to explain why he remains both influential and inspiring nearly two decades after his death."--Publisher's description.

Book
Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Alighiero Boetti (1940-1994) was one of the most innovative artists of the twentieth century. Originally associated with the Arte Povera group in Turin, in the 1960s he made works using materials sourced in hardware stores, shifting by 1970 to create art using drawing, Biro pens, newspaper images and artist's books. Based in Rome, he travelled constantly to distant destinations including Guatemala, Ethiopia, Japan, and, most frequently, Kabul, in Afghanistan. It was in Kabul that he set up a hotel and commissioned artisans to create embroideries, most famously his 'mappe', intricate maps of the world coloured according to political affiliation. Boetti's work is always poetic and playful, and he enjoyed creating different kinds of games involving time patterns and numeric sequences. At the same time he remained in touch with and inspired by the world around him, responsive to the complex political shifts that took place during the 1970s and '80s. Published on the occasion of a major touring exhibition, this comprehensive, lavishly illustrated overview brings together leading international critics and curators, each examining a different aspect of Boetti's achievements, together helping to explain why he remains both influential and inspiring nearly two decades after his death. Alighiero Boetti (1940-1994) was one of the most innovative artists of the twentieth century. This title brings together international critics and curators, examining various aspects of Boetti's achievements, and explaining why he remains both influential and inspiring decades after his death. Book
Hardcover. Condition: New. Published to accompany the first large-scale retrospective of Alighiero Boettiâs work outside Italy in over a decade, this volume presents the most comprehensive overview of the artistâs career to date. Covering all periods of Boettiâs broad oeuvre â" including early sculptural experiments associated with the Arte Povera movement, conceptual and ephemeral projects of the 1970s and the monumental embroideries and tapestries he fabricated up to his death â" this richly illustrated catalogue is structured as a typology of the artistâs body of work rather than a chronological progression. Essays address recurrent themes in Boettiâs work such as travel and geography, time, order and disorder and singularity and multitude, while contributions by scholars examine his early influences and his relationship to the cultural, political and social spheres of Italy and Afghanistan in the 1970s and 1980s. Exhibition @The Museum of Modern Art, NYC (02/2012-05/2012). Illus., 140 color/20 b&w. 300p. Bumped boards and some pencil underlining.
