Brown Cloth. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Sloane, Eric (illustrator). Eighth Printing. Brown Cloth. Very Good/Good. Eighth Printing. Hardback. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. 112 pages; excellent line illustratios by Eric Sloane; Sloane celebrates the variety and range of size and design of these antique wooden structures, and the craftsmen who built them with hand tools. From the 'Author's Note: "This book of sketches and comment is designed to lift the old barn and covered bridge out of the category of quaintness and the antique curiosity and to secure for them a rightful place in the story of architecture so that we may better see and feel the fine fabric of American development. .In the country the old tunes sound best; to those who can hear it, the song sung by old barns and wooden structures is precious music. I can be informative music too, for old houses speak as plainly as humans. (Beholding) an early barn or a hand-hewn bridge.is the closest thing to an intimate communion with the plain people who first kindled the American spirit and who evolved that architectural inheritance which has all but disappeared." Book condition: Book giver's message in ink, is on the front fly leaf.
