Hardcover. Condition: Fair. 1st Edition. Volume One. Rare early important work documenting the American Revolution and the first edition of the first American History book for children. The pages are tight but the front board is completely disconnected and loose. Pages have discoloration and some foxing. Early owners name on the front and end pages "Caleb Wright, 1802" as well as a note which may help with tracking down the owner through genealogy: 'C.E. Wright, Presented by his grandfather Caleb Wright".Volume I only; a second volume was separately published in Philadelphia the following year. Richard Snowden was born at Pontefract, Yorkshire, England, and came as a youth to Burlington, New Jersey. He soon moved to Newton Township, just outside Haddonfield, New Jersey, where he taught school. In 1807 he moved to Woodbury, continuing to teach as well as serve as a master in the chancery court. He later moved to Philadelphia, where he resided until his death. His book, written in a scriptural style which he thought "the most suitable to the capacities of young people," was long considered a curiosity. Nonetheless, it was reprinted several times.

Boards with heavy wear; rear panel with approx. 1/4th chipped out; edges worn through; spine edges chipped; spine faded; leather still supple given the age; old writing covering the front and rear interior panels; pages dusty with expected age toning. Richard Snowden (1753-1825) unnamed author of this "scriptural" style work, with verse numbers and written in Old English.
