First Edition. 1st Edition; 313 pp, frontis of author, 18 other photos, 10 being double page, (all photos sepia tone), three maps, one being double page, e/paper maps track chart of Discovery's voyaging. Grey hard covers with white spine titles. Pictorial unclipped dustwrapper. At the end of the 1920s and the beginning of the1930s the British, Australian and New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition twice visited the southern polar regions. The first sailed from Cape Town in October 1929, arriving in Australia on May 1, 1930. The second voyage left Hobart late November 1930 with the ship used for both expeditions, Discovery, returning there mid-March the following year. Author of this account of the two Antarctic voyages was a young zoologist and his record of the experience of sailing in often uncharted waters, mountainous seas, terrific winds, dangerous ice conditions and extreme cold make a fascinating story, to which is added scientific aspects, such as deep water marine life, cartography and the polar biology, plus interesting observations on the personalities of the ship's complement.i. With a full set of sails to relieve her steam engine the Discovery often moved under sail alone. Both expeditions were led by the famous Australian explorer Douglas Mawson. As New, appears unread.
