First Edition
1st edition. Hardcover. Original olive green cloth with gilt spine lettering, binding sturdy, pages all clean, tiny flecking to fore-edge, one leaf still uncut, plates and maps all present, half-title browned, presentation names and inscription on fep. Philby here tells the story of the last four months of 1918 when, as part of the British Political Mission to Central Arabia, he was sent on a diplomatic mission to Ibn Sa'oud, then Emir of Najd and the future king of Saudi Arabia, during which he became the first European to visit the southern province of Nejd. The book is accompanied by four articles by Philby, disbound from The Wide World Magazine of 1920, in which he gives an account of his travels in central Arabia among the Wahhabi Arabs, part of which was made in Arab costume to avoid arousing the suspicions of the Bedouin, and over entirely unknown country. These articles are perhaps Philby's first main appearance in print, and make a very interesting association with the book.
