hardcover. Condition: Very Good in Dustjacket. Cambridge. 1956. Harvard University Press. Revised & Reprinted. Very Good in Dustjacket . Edited by Peter Ure. 207 pages. hardcover. . keywords: Shakespeare . FROM THE PUBLISHER - This is a completely new edition of Richard II, not based upon the previous Arden edition. The Introduction surveys the problems of the text, the date of composition, and the sources in English and French literature. It also discusses the curious Garden Scene, and the supposed link between the play and the fortunes of the Earl of Essex. In a critical section Mr Ure attempts a fresh description of Richard's character in relation to the design of the play as a whole. The text is based on the First Quarto of 1597. A special feature of the commentary are the notes on material which indicate at the opening of each scene where Shakespeare is drawing on historical sources and where on his own invention. Other notes are designed to assist the reader's understanding of linguistic and textual points, historical allusions, and the background of thought and custom. In an Appendix extracts are given from books used by Shakespeare, including lengthy passages from Holinshed's Chronicles and Daniel's Civil Wars. The well-known ARDEN EDITION of Shakespeare's Plays, founded over half a century ago, quickly established itself as a standard series Of texts. But most of the volumes gradually became unobtainable, and all are now being revised and re-edited in the light of modern criticism and research. For the reader and student who wants something more substantial than the school texts or the one-volume ' complete Shakespeares ' the new Arden Shakespeare will prove the best possible edition of separate plays. inventory #17802.
