Augustus Carp, Esq., By Himself: Being the Autobiography of a Really Good Man is a satire, originally anonymous, first published in the United Kingdom in May 1924 and, later that year, by Houghton Mifflin in the United States. The author was an English physician, Sir Henry Howarth Bashford (1880?1961), and the illustrations were by "Robin" (Marjorie Blood). In his preface to a 1986 edition of the book, Anthony Burgess wrote "The book you have in your hands or hand or on your knee is one of the great comic novels of the twentieth century." Ref NNN 6.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. With Illustrations by Robin (Miss Marjorie Blood, later Mother Catherine of the Order of the Sacred Heart) (illustrator). States "First published May 1924 / New Impression November 1924." So, the second printing of the first edition, in red boards, titled in black to spine, NO dust jacket. All eight B&W plates firmly mounted where they ought to be. Humorous fictional autobiography of a self-righteous prig, rediscovered by Anthony Burgess circa 1966 (when he wrote a new introduction for the next known Heinemann printing) and quite a hard book to find in any original, pre-war Heinemann binding. The real author, Sir Henry Howarth Bashford Kt., M.D., F.R.C.P., was reportedly Chief Medical Officer to the Post Office, Medical Adviser to the Treasury, and Honorary Physician to King George VI, while illustrator "Robin" -- who renders most of the characters here as chinless pinheads -- is reliably reported to have actually been Miss Marjorie Blood, a frequent contributor to "Punch," who subsequently joined the Order of the Sacred Heart and became Mother Catherine at Roehampton Convent. 274 pp. Reduced from $550.
