Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Aunt Jane's Nieces is the title of a juvenile novel published in 1906, and written by L. Frank Baum under the pen name "Edith Van Dyne." Since the book was the first in a series of novels designed for adolescent girls, its title was applied to the entire series of ten books, published between 1906 and 1918. The novel "is genuinely original and interesting. It focuses on three adolescent girls, two of whom combine basic good character with ugly traits not usually found in fiction for young girls. Baum starts with a trite situation that could occasion prosy moralizing and gives it several original twists." The rest of the novels in the series feature travel, adventures, accidents, a kidnapping and rescue, romances, and a marriage for Louise. The final novel, Aunt Jane's Nieces in the Red Cross, was originally published in 1915. This item is printed on demand. Book
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Edith Van Dyne was of course a pen name of L. Frank Baum, author of "The Wizard of Oz" et sequelae. All 10 of the "Aunt Jane's Nieces" titles (through "In the Red Cross," 1915) listed to verso of half-title, so this (being the fourth in the series) is NOT a 1909 first printing. However, list of Gordon Stuart's "Boy Scouts of the Air" series at rear includes only seven titles through "In Belgium" (1915), NOT "Lone Star Patrol" (1916) nor "On Lost Island" (1917), so this may well be a 1915 or 1916 printing -- early to be found in a full original dust jacket. (Reilly and Britton became Reilly and Lee in 1918, so it can't be any later than that.) Jacket is moderately faded, though title and "Reilly and Britton" still legible to spine and colors still clear to jacket front panel vignette, including (we presume) Louise's blonde bouffant as well as the red-and-white patriotic bunting. So far as we can tell, no repairs have been attempted to this intact jacket. It has never been taped. Black-and-white frontispiece on coated stock; no other internals (that being standard.) Color oval vignette of the three nieces to front board in fur-trimmed gowns is a different image from that to front panel of jacket. In this episode, the nieces dabble in politics, urged by Uncle John to go to work on Cousin Kenneth's campaign for public office.(American women didn't win the right to vote, nationwide, till 1920.) 299 pp. followed by 10 pp. publishers ads (to rectos only) including for The Flying Girls Series, The Daring Twins, Elia Peattie's Blue Ridge/Azalea Series, H.L. Sayler's Airship Boys, etc. Now reduced from $700.
