Comment se retrouve-t-il là, à cinquante ans passés ? Pourquoi a-t-il consacré sa vie à traquer des images de mort ? Sur quelles souffrances, quelles fractures, quels manques s'est-il construit, au point de ne plus très bien savoir qui il est ? Les images s'entremêlent, de l'enfance, de la guerre, de l'amour, de sa mère.Les scènes de l'enfance montrent, dans les paysages contrastés, tour à tour mélancoliques et radieux, de la Bretagne pauvre de l'intérieur, un petit garçon solitaire, de père inconnu, abandonné par sa mère et élevé dans le dénuement par une grand-mère résignée et indifférente. Pour meubler sa solitude, il rêve devant un cimetière de voitures à ceux dont le destin s'est arrêté. L'école tôt quittée pour travailler à la ferme, ses rencontres avec le vieux peintre Corentin, naguère parisien, lui ouvrent des fenêtres sur l'ailleurs. Au point qu'à la mort de sa grand-mère, à dix-sept ans, il fuit pour tenter l'aventure à Paris. Dans l'ancien repaire de Corentin, à Pigalle, entretenu par des prostituées, il rencontre bientôt un homme silencieux au métier chargé de mystère qui le prend sous son aile : Paul est photographe de guerre, et dans son prochain voyage, il emmène le jeune garçon. Qui se retrouve à Saïgon en 1966. Son destin est scellé. Il reprendra le flambeau de Paul, qui, lui, ne reviendra pas.Les reportages, les voyages, les scènes de violence s'enchaînent, tandis qu'à Paris où il revient de temps à autre, il se construit une vie et, comme malgré lui, une carrière et une réputation : son union avec Sylvie, critique littéraire mondaine, ambitieuse et sophistiquée, lui apparaît très vite comme une erreur et le laisse comme étranger à lui-même. Ses succès, ses expositions, l'admiration qu'il suscite le laissent indifférent : seuls comptent pour lui ses départs, les images qu'il capte, en Afrique, à Vukovar, partout où règnent la guerre et le chaos.Une figure revient sans cesse dans ce flux de souvenirs et d'émotions : celle de la mère qu'il n'a pas eue et que sans doute il a fuie pendant toutes ces années. Il apprend la mort de sa mère au moment où l'équilibre chancelant de sa vie avec Sylvie bascule : il ne lui en dira rien, alors qu'ils sortent d'une violente dispute sur la question de l'enfant, dont il ne veut à aucun prix. Il partira seul pour les funérailles, mais n'y assistera pas, refusant de voir le corps, et s'en allant à la recherche de la mer et des côtes bretonnes qu'il n'avait jamais vues.Quelques jours plus tard, au vernissage de sa grande rétrospective, alors qu'il vient de commencer, ivre, un discours cynique et écoeuré sur son métier de voyeur, il s'effondre. Il est désormais trop tard, même pour retrouver cette Lilith avec qui il a partagé deux jours et deux nuits inoubliables, dans un sous-sol de Groznyï et qui seule aurait pu l'écouter, le comprendre, et peut-être le réconcilier avec lui-même. Mais tout est fini pour lui, il est rattrapé par son passé, son monde intérieur. De ces souvenirs et de ces images un autre surgit, auquel il s'affronte avant de mourir, dans ce qui sera sa dernière guerre.Ce roman est un tour de force : en se glissant dans la peau d'un homme agonisant, au long d'un monologue halluciné, Chahdortt Djavann donne à comprendre intimement la figure du photographe de guerre qu'est son héros. Elle interroge la fascination qu'exercent la violence, la pulsion de mort et l'absurdité d'un destin. De ses phrases courtes et de la juxtaposition haletante des scènes, naît un texte tendu et prenant.
