Duodecimo, contemporary calf, spine panelled in gilt between raised bands. Uncommon fourth French edition, based on the Raguenet edition of 1692, the version thought to have been influenced by a now unknown manuscript version by Foigny himself. The most remarkable aspect of this 1732 edition is that it was published by David Mortier, best known as one of the partners of the great Dutch mapmaking firm Covens and Mortier (the title-page calls him a bookseller at the sign of the "Mappe-Monde"), an association which must explain the renewed interest in Foigny's book while also showing the continued confusion about where the truth really lay. Foigny, a defrocked Franciscan monk, wrote this work while sheltering in Geneva in the 1670s. The inventiveness of the story, into which Foigny has packed any number of incredible creations, has baffled and delighted generations of critics: it tells the story of Jacques Sadeur, an hermaphroditic sailor whose latest shipwreck (his fourth) had nearly proved fatal, only for him to be saved by a winged monster which plucked him from the Indian Ocean and dropped him conveniently ashore in western Australia. Ashore, his luck continues: as an hermaphrodite himself (the Jesuit priests called him male as a convenience) Sadeur is especially acceptable to the hermaphroditic, asexual society that he discovers, which is set in a land of harmony and reason, but one which is simultaneously involved in a vicious war against their inland neighbours. The ensuing tale is told with tremendous verve and is a subtle reflection on the very concept of utopia. Or, as Friederich puts it, 'bored by decades of sexless bliss, rational discussions and indoctrinations, athletic exercises and peaceful gardening,' the protagonist makes a run for it. One of the earliest and best of all imaginary voyages to Australia, Foigny's book refers to the inhabitants of his Terre Australe as "Australiens" - the first time that the term was used to describe an inhabitant of the southern continent. This important work, which combines several major traditions, is 'a major utopia, rich in satire and iconoclasm' (Gibson) and presents a narrative response to the strict regimentation of the utopia, particularly in the context of the Pacific (Spate comments: 'in part at least a send-up of Quirós'). . Slight wear at extremities; label missing but the underlying type impression serves to replace it.

1 vol. 12mo (163 x 100 mm) of : [8] ff. (title, preface, table) ; 341 pp. ; [2] pp. (approval, privilege). Full contemporary marbled basane, smooth spine decorated, fawn morocco title, red edges, endpapers of dominoté paper with floral motifs. Last edition of the most famous utopian novel of the 17th century about the southern land (OE: 1676) and its inhabitants by Gabriel de Foigny (1630-1692). A defrocked monk and libertine thinker, Foigny was initially a member of the Cordeliers order, where he was considered an excellent preacher. It was not until 1666 that he turned away from Catholicism and moved to Switzerland. From then on, he published a few lessons including the manuals: "La Facilité et l'élégance des langues latine et françoise comprend en XCI leçons (1673)" and "L'Usage du jeu royal de la langue latine (1674)". His utopian novel was published in 1676 and provoked strong reactions and indignation. Indeed, this fictional account of the southern land, a land of which practically nothing was known at the time, was forbidden to be sold in several regions, including Geneva, because of its description of the unorthodox mores and customs of the "Australians". Originally published under the title: "La Terre australe connue, i.e. the description of this hitherto unknown country, its manners and customs, by Mr. Sadeur", the work depicts a utopian society whose marvellousness turns into parody. The main character, Jacques Sadeur, also imaginary, discovers a country: "without rules and without precepts" (translated from French), in which there is neither power nor classes and where the anarchy which reigns there creates a certain harmony. The idea is reminiscent of "L'Abbaye de Thélème", described in Gargantua by Rabelais, published in 1534. Foigny imagines a country populated by good savages commanded by reason "which unites them and leads them to all that is best and most just" (translated from French). One can read that this country: "can pass for a perfect image of the state of the man enjoying the natural bliss on the Earth" (translated from French). Throughout the pages, the author depicts a society populated by egalitarian and vegetarian hermaphrodites, who, in spite of their gentleness and tolerance, massacre all sexual individuals, the latter being seen as half-men. Jacques Sadeur, himself a hermaphrodite, is thus accepted and lives for 35 years in this imaginary society. There is no need to dwell on the reasons for the censorship of such a story at that time. Foigny was logically forced to explain the content of his scandalous book to the courts. In order to escape justice and to affirm his good faith, he pretended to be a simple translator and not the author of the incriminated work. Gabriel de Foigny died, according to the authors, in a convent of his order in Savoy in 1692. Because of its setbacks, the work has known many editi.

Couverture rigide. Condition: Bon. in 12, de 8ff.-341pp.-1f., pl. veau marbré époque, dos lisse orné, qq. ff. lég. brunis sinon bon exemplaire. Utopies n °120 - Versins p.338 - Hartig & Soboul p.34.
