1 photo 10 x 16 cm. Photograph with minor surface blemishes, printed on stiff board with deckled, gilt edges. Good. Photo shows child, under one year of age, in elaborate white dress that covers its feet. Child is propped up in a chair with cushions around it.
No binding. Condition: Very Good. Printed back. 137 22nd Street. Listing protocol: Subject / Type of Photo / Photographer or Studio / City & State / Date, if known.Origin on the CDV [carte de visite] Photograph. Realizing that a market existed for a process that could produce a large number of prints very cheaply, the Parisian photographer, Andre Adolphe Disderi, devised a way of reducing costs by taking several portraits on one photographic plate. This required the use of a special camera and many different types were developed. Some had several lenses, which could be uncovered either individually, or all at the same time to give (usually) 4 or 8 photographs on the same plate. Others had a mechanism for moving the photographic plate so that each image was recorded on a different area.Because several exposures were made on each plate a number of positive prints could be made at the same time. The negative could be reprinted many times to produce the number of copies required by the sitter. The resulting photographs were mounted onto card. They were called cartes de visite because they were about the size of a visiting card.Dimensions given, if any, are approximate. Scans large to show any defects. Unseen defects described. Item complete as issued unless otherwise stated. VG or better condition.

No binding. Condition: Very Good. Jewett City & Taftville. Listing protocol: Subject / Type of Photo / Photographer or Studio / City & State / Date, if known. THUS, if the title said, for example: "Bob Evans mustache & specs cabinet card Leonard: Swampoodle MA 1889" would mean the photo shown was a photo of Bob Evans with mustache & spectacles cabinet photo card format taken by Leonard [photographic studio] in Swampoodle MA in 1889.Dimensions given, if any, are approximate. Scans large to show any defects. Unseen defects described. Item complete as issued unless otherwise stated. VG or better condition. NOTE: Every single piece of information we have on this item is contained in this description, including the name of the person, if known; if a name for the person is given, it is written on the front or back of the picture in ink or pencil, either originally at the time of the photo, or, in some cases, by us when we remove a photograph from an album in which identifications are written on the pages, not on the photos themselves. We also do not invent names for these people, so please do not ask "How do you know this is J*** S***?" We would not say whom it is unless we did know based on the information on the picture itself. And finally, we cannot, due to staff and time limitations, scan picture backs if they are not shown. What we judge to be important backs are scanned and shown in the auction description. Introduced in the 1860s, cabinet cards superseded the carte de visite. The format was common until about 1900. Early cabinet cards typically used albumen prints, although a variety of other processes were used for later cards. The mount is usually about 4 ¼ x 6 ½". The photograph is usually smaller than the card, leaving approximately a half inch at the bottom, where the name of the photographer or studio was printed. Often, the photographer will have the back printed simply with his name, address and location or in quite elaborate fashion with organic designs and rustic forms or an image of the building where the studio was located. Each decade of the cabinet card, had its own characteristic studio accessories: 1860's - balustrade, column and curtain 1870's - rustic bridge and stile 1880's - hammock, swing and railway carriage 1890's - palm trees, cockatoos (usually stuffed specimens) and bicycles 1900's - the motor car.
