Insert from The Lakeside Classics present. Clean and unmarked, unread. Published in the belief that "a simple book, dignified and well designed, would be an appropriate holiday gift." A very accomplished 19th century woman "Elizabeth Hobbs Keckley (February 1818 May 1907) was an American seamstress, activist, and writer who lived in Washington, D.C. She was the personal dressmaker and confidante of Mary Todd Lincoln. She wrote an autobiography. She was born enslaved, to her father, Armistead Burwell, and later his daughter who was her half-sister, Anne Burwell Garland, wife of Hugh A. Garland. She became a nursemaid to an infant when she was four years old. She received brutal treatment including being raped and whipped to the point of bleeding welts from Burwell's family members and a family friend. When she became a seamstress, the Garland family found that it was financially advantageous to have her make clothes for others. The money that she made helped to support the Garland family's 17 members. In November 1855, she purchased her and her son's freedom in St. Louis, Missouri. Keckley moved to Washington, D.C., in 1860. She established a dressmaking business that grew to include a staff of 20 seamstresses. Her clients were the wives of elite politicians, including Varina Davis, the wife of Jefferson Davis, and Mary Anna Custis Lee, the wife of Robert E. Lee.She was awarded 27 patents in her lifetime." --Wikipedia. Every effort is made to ship all books and other items within 24 hours. Clean recycled packing material will be used when possible. Born into slavery, Elizabeth Hobbs Keckley (ca. 1824-1907) rose to a position of respect as a talented dressmaker and designer to the political elite of Washington and a confidante of First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln. In this unusual memoire Keckley offers a view of the formal and informal networks that African Americans established among themselves, as well as an insiders perspective of the men who made Civil War politics and the women who influenced them.
