Octavo (8 1/2" x 5 1/4") bound in original publisher's grey cloth with black lettering to spine and cover in original jacket. Selected and annotated by Fred Reinfeld. (Betts: 29-143) First American edition. Contains a biographical introduction, with a tabular record of Tarrasch's tournament and match results, and 183 games fully annotated. Includes indexes of openings and opponents. Tarrasch was the dominant force in European chess in the early 1890's and his ability to win top level tournaments continued via his huge triumph at Vienna 1898 on to the "World Tournament Championship" of Ostend 1907. Tarrasch was rightly regarded as the teacher of generations of European and world Masters, hence his title Praeceptor Germaniae - the Professor from Germany. Condition: Book plate to front end paper, pages beginning to toned. Jacket price clipped, corners and spine ends chipped, edge wear with some closed tears, chips and creases, one inch by quarter in chipped at spine back head corner. A very good copy in about a very good jacket.
