Illustrated with a frontispiece and three plates by Jesse Wilcox Smith and with decorated endpapers, pastedowns, and each page with decorations by Robert McQuinn. Originally published in Collier's Weekly, this is the first trade edition enhanced by Wilcox Smith's tender depictions of young children learning about the world around them. The gutter starting in one spot, the leaves with an occasional spot of foxing.
First printing thus. Blue cloth with oval illustrated cover label. Minor rubbing to spine tips and corners, near fine in custom mylar cover.
