Il y fait la rencontre d'un jeune romancier italien extraverti, fortuné et désinvolte, son parfait antonyme, qui ne tarde pas à le convaincre de le suivre à Sabaudia, la ville hantée par Pasolini et Moravia, dans une résidence fastueuse nichée au coeur de l'Agro Pontino construite pour Don Metzger. L'extravagant mécène, potentat de la production cinématographique, y convie tous les ans pour des fêtes mémorables de nombreuses personnalités de la scène artistique internationale et y assouvit son obsession : faire voler des montgolfières étrangement vides, façonnées comme des oeuvres d'art par Bosco, son âme damnée, un ancien mercenaire catalan. Les jeunes gens y retrouvent une faune hétéroclite d'artistes décalés et de pique-assiettes internationaux ainsi que le corps de leur amphitryon, flottant sur le lac de la propriété. Le meurtre est manifeste et Bosco se charge d'enquêter pour venger la mort de son protecteur. D'autorité, il enferme les invités qui, soudainement livrés à leurs peurs les plus intimes, leurs fragilités les plus refoulées et leur inébranlable égoïsme se transforment en protagonistes d'un asphyxiant huis clos qui tourne au pugilat. Questions de sexe, d'argent, de pouvoir : accusations et trahisons s'enchaînent à un rythme effréné. La seule issue possible à ce cauchemar semble être que le combat s'arrête faute de combattants, qu'il ne subsiste plus personne pour le raconter. Une logique narrative, un ton, un pathos, l'univers de João Tordo, tout entier au service de l'histoire plutôt que de la rhétorique, explore des voies singulières et tortueuses.
