Book First Edition
Original Blue Cloth Hardback. Condition: Very Good Plus. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. 1961. First edition. ix, 280pp. When Sir Sidney Smith marches through the streets of Jerusalem to the Holy Sepulchre after defeating Napoleon at Acre, there was not a single British resident there to witness his triumph. A hundred years later 'The Times' published a letter from distinguished residents in Jerusalem signed by, among others, the Anglican Bishop, the Head of the Palestine Exploration Fund, the Headmistress of the English School, and the Manager of Thos. Cook & Son. Based on manuscript sources in England and the Middle East, this study is the first to examine the history of this development in detail. The book is bound in the original blue cloth covered boards with gold titling to the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with bumping to the bottom of the spine and top front spine corner. The contents are tight and clean with a name and date (1962) written on the top corner of the title page. There is a later name and date written on the front free endpaper. The clipped dustwrapper has shelfwear with some soiling and the spine is faded. Ther top edge of the wrapper is rubbed with some creasing and a few tears of about 1/4". The spine ends and corners are bumped and nicked with small pieces missing from the spine corners.
