First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. This copy is in as new, unmarked condition bound in green cloth covered boards with bright gilt titling to the spine and blind floral linked bronte motif to the upper board. This copy is bright, tight, white and square. The unclipped dust wrapper is lightly sunned to the spine but still in fine condition. International postal rates are calculated on a book weighing 1 Kilo, in cases where the book weighs more than 1 Kilo increased postal rates will be quoted, where the book weighs less then postage will be reduced accordingly. Taking Mrs Gaskell's 'Life of Charlotte Brontė' as her starting point and inspiration, Margaret Lane has produced an absolutely engrossing and lifelike portrait of the Brontė family life at Haworth Parsonage and, very occasionally, elsewhere. She uses extracts, sparingly but to excellent effect, from Mrs Gaskell's work and adds extra detail and her own commentaries to highlight the amazing lifestyle of the family. Margaret Lane captures the ambience of the Parsonage superbly and the reader gets a very definite feel for the quietness and loneliness of it all, which is highlighted in one of Charlotte's letters to her lifelong friend Ellen Nussey when she wrote, 'To sit in a lonely room - the clock ticking loud through a still house - is a trial.' And throughout the book the atmosphere is similar and one can almost feel being in that Parsonage at the time. It is a tremendous read and if only one book on the Brontės is to be read, this one definitely should perhaps be it. This book has been pleasingly illustrated with woodcuts by Joan Hassall. Ref II 2.
