In response to a late 1960s request to distinuguised author on both sides of the Atlantic to contribute forthright pieces of an ertotic nature (in the words of one British drama critic, ". a place for a civilized man to take a civilized woman to spend an evening of civilized erotic stimulation." Tynan assempled a group of sketches with almost every conceivable erotic fantasy and sexual reality. The result was a revue consisting of sex-related topics. At the time, Oh! Calcutta sparked considerable controversy and press coverage due toi the fact that it included extensive ful-frontal male and female nudity. Between the intial New York and London runs and the Broadway revival, it vran for over 7,000 performances.
