Esta obra anónima, joya de la épica medieval rusa del siglo XII, narra la infortunada expedición militar de Ígor Sviatoslávich, príncipe de Nóvgorod Siéverski, contra los janes Gza y Konchak, jefes políticos y militares de los nómadas polovtsianos, pueblo túrquico procedente de las estepas de Asia Central, que amenazaba constantemente con sus correrías la ya fragmentada y debilitada Rus de Kíev, y jugaba un papel fundamental en las guerras intestinas entre los príncipes feudales de Kíev y del resto de la Rus. La obra es un canto a la unidad de los príncipes feudales rusos para conjurar la amenaza polovtsiana haciendo constantes referencias a la tierra rusa, a la historia y la cultura de la Rus desde los tiempos del emperador romano Trajano hasta finales del siglo XII, ensalzando a las grandes figuras históricas que contribuyeron a la gloria del país y denigrando a aquellas que fueron la causa de su ruina en diferentes etapas de su historia. Asimismo, es la primera obra medieval rusa en la que la mujer feudal tiene un papel de coprotagonista en la figura de Yaroslavna, esposa de Ígor. La edición, preparada por Ángel Luis Encinas Moral, ofrece, además de la traducción al castellano, el texto original en ruso moderno y en ruso antiguo, este último reproducido mediante la bella caligrafía del maestro miniaturista Iván Golíkov.
