Hardcover. Condition: New. A major work of post-apocalyptic science fiction, Walter M. Miller Jr s best-selling A Canticle for Leibowitz receives its first fully illustrated edition courtesy of Folio, introduced by Pulitzer Prize-winning critic Michael Dirda and with evocative, medieval artwork by Elliot Lang. Limited to 500 copies. Explore a world of feudal futurism in the beloved classic A Canticle for Leibowitz, a post-nuclear masterwork featuring 12 full-page pieces of original artwork by premier fantasy artist Elliot Lang. Folio presents Walter M. Miller Jr s Hugo-award winning novel as never before seen. This vital chapter in the canon of 20th century science fiction takes place in a scorched earth in which an order of monks is dedicated to recovering the remnants of scientific knowledge lost to nuclear war. Evocative, complex and gently funny, A Canticle for Leibowitz most recently provided direct inspiration for the Fallout games and TV show, and has been one of Folio s most consistently requested titles. Having recommended the book himself, Pulitzer Prize-winning literary essayist Michael Dirda provides an illuminating introduction, while Elliot Lang s brilliant designs and illustrations create a truly immersive reading experience. Along with medieval-style historiated chapter initials, scrollworked part-titles, ingenious endpaper design, an illustrated cover and slipcase, Lang also contributes an exclusive afterword that tells the uncanny story of his own personal connection to this timeless work of spiritual wonder and post-apocalyptic terror. Signed by Illustrator(s).

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good-. Illustrated by Milton Glaser (illustrator). 1st British Edition; 1st Printing. Cover Art; SIGNED EDITION. This copy has a Laid-in typed letter, signed by Walter Miller (to Mel Korshak - a famous SciFi fan and the founder of Shasta Publishers). This book is in Very Good condition and has a Very Good- dust jacket. The book is in generally clean, bright condition. The spine ends of the book covers have some beginning bumping. The text pages are mostly clean and bright, with the exception of some light foxing to the front endpaper and some noticeable foxing to the front foredge of the text block. The dust jacket is in generally clean condition, with a couple of small chips to the top and bottom front panel, a small semi-closed tear to the top front panel and some light ground-in dirt to the flap joints. "By 1955, Walter M. Miller Jr. Had published over 30 science fiction short stories in such magazines as Astounding Science Fiction, Amazing Stories, and Fantastic Adventures. Significant themes of his stories included loss of scientific knowledge or "socio-technological regression and its presumed antithesis, continued technological advance", its preservation through oral transmission, the guardianship of archives by priests, and "that side of [human] behavior which can only be termed religious". These thematic elements, combined with the growing subgenre of the "post-disaster" story and Miller's own experiences during World War II, set the stage for the short story that would become the opening section of A Canticle for Leibowitz."
