Mütherich, Florentine / Gehde, Joachim E. Carolingian painting. Introduction by Florentine Mutherich ; provenances and commentaries by Joachim E. Gaehde. New York: George Braziller, 1976, stated First Printing, 126pp., sewn PAPERBACK, book is very slightly warped, but otherwise a very good copy. The late eighth and early ninth century A.D. marked the flowering of a new period in the history of European culture. Civilization and the arts were revived by Charlemagne, as the King summoned the leading European scholars and artists to his court: men from the British Isles, France, Italy, and Spain. In turn, Carolingian culture and art spread throughout the main centers of the Frankish Empire, and later to other continental European countries, as well as the British Isles. The origins of the coloring and drawing in Carolingian manuscripts have been linked to models reproduced in the late antique style; the various elements of ornamentation and iconography were borrowed from the Anglo-Celtic, Byzantine, Syrian and Merovingian art forms. Florentine Mütherich of the Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschicbte in Munich and Joachim E. Gaehde of Brandeis University have provided an introduction and detailed descriptions of the major manuscripts of the period, together with commentaries on the individual folios reproduced here. 9780807608524 ISBN 0807608521.
