This scarce first American edition of is No. 22, the next-to-last title in the Direction Series by New Directions, and Gracq's first novel, which was originally published in French in 1938. The Very Good+ book has minor stain at bottom of the spine, and some browning spots on verso of front cover. The classic Alvin Lustig-desidgned dust jacket is in Very Good+ to Near Fine condition, but is price-slipped on front flap, and shows some wear at bottom of spine.

Top foreedge is a bit dusty, as well. Some wear at the very top of the crown of the spine. Binding good and tight. Original owner's name on the front endpaper. Translated from French by Louise Varese. Title page does not have a date. Publisher is shown (on the title page) as being Direction 22. Page opposite title page lists the books in the Direction Series, of which this is number 22 (the last one on the list). No date on the copyright page, either. Printed in Eire. Copyright page says The Direction Series and New Directions Books are published by James Laughlin at Norfolk, Connecticut. 145 pages. The whole text block is clean and corners square. Pages evenly toned from age. The Castle of Argol was Gracq's first novel, originally published in 1938. This is the first English translation. Measures 4.5 x 6.5 inches.
