The first book by Hans Augusto and Margret Rey which mentions "Curious George," the monkey character to become famous in a series of seven Curious George titles. Rey introduces him here as one of the nine monkeys: "Curious George who was clever, too." Binding with light wear along edges and water stains on covers with light bleeding of red to foredge though not wavy. Some small red color spots in margins of pages 10-15. Inscription on free front endpaper "1956 Happy Birthday to Odom from Dad." Block lightly age-toned. Binding in overall good-, interior in good+ to very good condition.

When it was first published in France, Raffy's original name was Rafi, changed to Raffy when it was first published in the United Kingdom, but when it appeared in the United States, the character was renamed Cecily G.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. H. A. Rey (illustrator). 1st Edition. No other date is given than 1942 on the title and copyright pages and at the end of a gift inscription. The cover has brown cloth with black letters and an illustration. A color illustration is on every page. The name and illustration of Curious George first appears in the character list on p. 2. The ends of the spine strip are frayed. All but one board corner is threadbare, up to a linear 1/2 in. The top end of the front board has a 1/8 in. and a 1/4 in., threadbare spot. Light fading and stains are along the top end of the back board. About a third of the pages have small stains, mostly faint. A 1/4 in. and a 1/2 in. closed tear on bottom margins are tipped back together with glue. The front FEP has an area where pencil scribbling was erased, but remains faintly visible. Chips to the corners and spine ends. A 2" split to the upper, rear flap fold. Also a 1 1/2" tear to the upper, rear at the spine. Original price of $1.75 to the front flap. To the rear flap there is an ad for the first American edition of Curious George. Cecily G included the first appearance of Curious George when the earlier French edition appeared. ; 4to 11" - 13" tall.
