A dix-neuf ans, il refait la traversée dans l'autre sens, s'installe à Manhattan et, tout en suivant des cours du soir, exerce divers métiers. C'est en 1959 qu'il commence à enseigner. Il est professeur d'anglais à la Stuyvesant High School pendant de nombreuses années et se produit sur scène avec son frère dans un spectacle illustrant leur jeunesse irlandaise. Au terme d'une longue carrière, il connaît le succès littéraire à l'âge de soixante-six ans avec le premier volume de ses mémoires, Les Cendres d'Angela (Belfond, 1997), élu meilleur livre de l'année par le Time Magazine. Ce best-seller mondial lui vaut également le prix Pulitzer 1997 et le National Book Critics Circle Awards, et est adapté au cinéma par Alan Parker. Suivra C'est comment l'Amérique ? (Belfond, 2000), deuxième volet d'une trilogie achevée avec Teacher Man (Belfond, 2006). Franck McCourt est décédé en juillet 2009.
