Some plates with printed tissue guards. original gilt & black-stamped cloth, all edges gilt. A fabulous set of reference, revised to include current (at the time, anyway) American literary figures and characters. Many American artists are represented within these volumes. Internally VG and clean, leather covers are scuffed and dried, ex art library set with minimal marks.

Condition: Near Fine. 8 vols.; volume 1 only 1896, the others 1902; 4to; half brown leather, and pebbled cloth; covers and spines lettered and decorated in gilt; raised bands; all edges red. Each volume with frontis; full page plates with tissue guards printed in red including titles, and lengthy quotations and descriptions. Hundreds of ilustrations including photogravures, etchings, wood engravings and typogravures. A marvelous showcase of the artists and book Illustrators of the day including: Madeleine Lemaire, Gerard, Emile Teschenforff, Gustave Doré, Sir Everett Millais, Howard Pyle, Frederick Barnard, E. A. Abbey, P. Guérin, William Morris, Sir Edwin Landseer, Jean-Louis Gerome, Jean Francois Millet, and many others. Volume 8 with rubbing along lower front half of spine and edges, and light foxing to title page. The rest of the set generally very fine with only occasional light to moderate rubbing mostly to some bottom edges.
