Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Lord Dunsany (Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett, 18th Baron of Dunsany, 1878-1957), was a pioneer of fantasy literature. He was an Anglo-Irish writer and dramatist and was a prolific author, producing over 90 books and hundreds of short stories. He was producing work in the fantasy genre before it even had a name, and his writing inspired authors such as JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis. 2024 represents the centenary of his 1924 classic fantasy novel 'The King of Elfland's Daughter'. We hope the focus on that book will bring him to a wider modern audience. Here, we offer The Charwoman's Shadow by Lord Dunsany. Published by G.P. Putnam's Sons, London & New York. Hardback. Condition: Fine. First Edition. Dunsany, Lord. The Charwoman's Shadow. London & New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons, [1926]. First edition. Octavo, pp. [1-2] [i-vi] vii-viii [ix-x] 1-339 [340: printer's colophon]. Original navy blue cloth, front and spine panels stamped in gold. A fine, sharp copy. #3161. $125.The third novel-length fantasy by Dunsany, this is imbued with his characteristic yearning for what has been irretrievably lost, but the conflict between desire and understanding here takes on a more somber tone than in his short stories. The setting is a generically medieval Spain, the narrative structure that of an almost matter-of-fact fairy tale. "Sent by his father to learn the Black Art of making gold, a young man first loses his shadow to his magician teacher and then wins it back, together with that of his helper, the magician's charwoman." -- Survey of Modern Fantasy Literature I, pp. 232-35.
