Hard Cover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. NY: Harcourt Brace. Near Fine in Fine dust jacket. 1987. Hard Cover. In third century B. C. Ch'in, as that alien world is depicted in this extraordinary feat of scholarship and imaginative representation, modes of behavior were exotic, at least from a modern vantage point. A malicious courtier induces the susceptible prince to decapitate a loyal official, then throws his body to the fishes, leaving his eyes for the birds to peck. Another "honest subject of the state" is made mincemeat of, pickled and sold in the marketplace. A knight-errant admires the hands of a ravishing lutist and is presented with them, exquisitely boxed. In the afterword, Levi insists that this is neither a work of history nor a historical novel, as it portrays no "characters" in any dramatic or conventional sense. It is a really a "political fable" based on historical documents concerning the turbulent, war-torn period out of which the First Empire emerged. As such, Levi projects with a fine hand events that left permanent impressions on Chinese history, culture, religion, manners and mind-sets. Publishers Weekly CONDITION: Remainder mark to bottom page edges. The dust jacket is protected by an adjustable mylar cover. 6 by 9 Inches. bx 34.

Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: As New. x, 341 pgs. mapped endpapers; French author Levi, sinologist, has written an unforgetable novel depicting the life & times of China during the time of Ch'in Shih Huang Ti, the unforgetable Emporer who unified seven warring provinces & built the Great Wall. More than perhaps any other person, Ch'in Shih Huang Ti held total, absolute power over all others. Corruption abounded and excesses, at the top, were everywhere, yet the Emperor dreamed of eternity. He ordered history books to be burned in order to wipe out the past, etc. etc. He even ordered armies of warriors molded in clay & placed in vast underground chambers to guard his future tomb and afterlife. Levi's picture & account of Emperor Ch'in Shih Huang Ti's machinery of absolute power is most disquieting yet thrilling at the same time. Both d.j. & volume are like new condition. Size: 6 1/4" x 9 1/4".
