Included is a critical essay on the artists work and biographical details. This copy has a slight impression to the front cover, not very noticeable, appears to be the results of having a heavy book squeezed next to this copy on a shelf. No former ownership marks. Christian Von Schneidau was one of a group of artists who worked in California in the early 20th Century, along with Alson Clark, Sam Hyde Harris and Franz Bischoff. A popular portrait painter in the 1920's and 1930's, he also painted seascapes an landscapes as well. Part of a series of title published by Petersen on California artists. Christian Von Schneidau (1893-1976) by Janet Dominik SC 1986 Petersen Publishing Company VG fine art monograph Christian von Schneidau was a well known California portrait painter who was recognized for his paintings of Hollywood stars and the Los Angeles elite. Born in Smoland, Sweden on March 24, 1893 of noble birth. Von Schneidau received his early education from private tutors and studied at the Stockholm Academy of Fine Art. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1906 and spent the first ten years as a resident of Minnesota. He continued his art studies at the AIC under Reynolds and Buehr, and in the East under H. M. Walcott, C. W. Hawthorne, and Richard Miller. After settling in Los Angeles in 1917, he operated the Von Schneidau School of Fine Art. Married twice, he was the husband of musician Esther Bergman during 1923-31 and in 1938 married one of his pupils, Signe Larson Nelson.
