Whether rescuing Navy fliers off Truk or stalking enemy convoys off Japan, Tang carried the war to the enemy with unparalleled ferocity. Tang's skipper on all five of her war patrols, Rear Admiral Richard H. O'Kane is acknowledged as the top submarine skipper of World War II. His personal decorations include three Navy Crosses and the Congressional Medal of Honor. He retired as a rear admiral from his command of the Submarine School, rounding out twenty years with the boats. He also wrote the classic Wahoo: The Patrols of America's Most Famous WWII Submarine.\n.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. First edition. Octavo. 480pp. Illustrated. Fine in fine dustwrapper. Inscribed by Rear Admiral O'Kane to a fellow Congressional Medal of Honor-winner: " To Carlos Ogden, Richard H. O'Kane." O'Kane and his submarine the *Tang* averaged more than double the amount of kills as any other American submarine, and O'Kane despite a relatively short tour, was the leading submarine skipper in the war. In one action he sank five Japanese ships in 70 seconds. He also pioneered new techniques in submarine rescues, saving 22 American aviators. In 1944 the *Tang* was sunk and O'Kane spent the rest of the war in a Japanese prison camp. He was one of the most highly decorated sailors of the war, winning three Navy Crosses and three Silver Stars in addition to his Medal of Honor. Carlos Ogden was a first lieutenant who singlehandedly took out three gun emplacements (an .88 and two machine gun nests) at Cherbourg, France, armed only with an M1, a grenade launcher, and some hand grenades, despite having been hit a glancing blow from a machine gun bullet to the head. Inscriptions linking two Medal of Honor-winners are uncommon.
