First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very good plus. Dust Jacket Condition: Poor. 1st Edition. 88pp, top edge black; stamped white linen, ribbon marker, jacket printed recto & verso (6.50 koruna, rear); 172 x 128 x 10 mm. First edition of the author's acclaimed fifth book, second printing (dotisk prvniho vydani); a volume ultimately banned & burned following the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia (1968). Volume 12 in the series Zivot Kolem Nas (Life Around Us), edited by Ivan Klima et al. The second printing differs from the first in dropping the illustrations by Karel Vaca, while being slightly larger. It bears noting that the Jiri Menzel film released the year after publication, earned the first-time director an Academy Award for best foreign film. Cloth on front cover lightly stained at crown, with light spatter of foxing near foot. The jacket, likewise stained at crown of upper panel (a bit more pronounced), is missing the bottom 6cm & top 5mm of the spine (affecting two letters in the title); verso jacket text unaffected. An extremely elusive title in its primary edition.

Single sheet, printed to recto and verso, folded three times to created a folding leaflet of [8] pp. Very good or better. The film went on to win the Best Foreign Language Oscar in 1968. Illustrated with fourteen photographic stills from the movie, including two full-page portraits of leading actors Václav Necká? and Jitka Bendová. Also features a short text by Hrabal about his novella, excerpts from letters to Hrabal, and a short interview with Necká? Photography attributed to Ji?í Stach.

Based on Bohumil Hrabal's 1965 novel, about a young man working at a German-occupied train station in Czechoslovakia during World War II. A key entry in Czechoslovak New Wave film, poignantly asserting that the Czech people were part of an oppressive system during the war, hitting the mark with sly wit and a peculiar innocence.
