His inscriptions reflect how important Mike and Barb and later Mary were to Haldeman. In 1976 he inscibed 'The Forever War' "For Michael Fitzsimmons MidAmerican 4 Sept 76 Joe Haldeman" then years later in another pen "For Mike and Mary -21 years later Can it be? (a cartouche) less hair but a lot more in Joe Haldeman" in his book "1968" "For Michael and Mary, for the help you gave me in Becoming a Civilian Again.Joe Haldeman" Haldeman was wounded in Vietnam.
