First Edition
Contemporary Full Leather. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. First Edition. 760pp. Contemporary full leather, intricately stamped in blind, five raised bands. Illustrated with one plate of figures of musical instruments, executed in copperplate engraving. One copperplate engraving as a headpiece before the commentary begins. This is Calmet's commentary on the Psalms. Covers chapter 72 to the 150. Calmet (1672-1757) is best known for his commentary, which was unusual in Roman Catholicism since it departed from an allegorical interpretation and focused on a more literal interpretation. He also wrote the first scholarly Bible dictionary (the 18th century English edition has been on my personal "want list" for years). He was a Benedictine monk in St. Vannes, France. New Schaff-Herzog says, "His numerous works give evidence of extraordinary reading and erudition, but lack critical ability and insight. His best writings are devoted to the interpretation of the Bible according to the principles of the Council of Trent." Of this work, "The excurses on each book, dealing with chronology, history, antiquities and similar topics were the most valuable portion of the work" (II:351). Corners bumped and rubbed through. Joints split; front cover detached but present. Most of the leather spine label is chipped away. Bookplate of the Bishop of Limerick on the front pastedown, but it is impossible to see which bishop since it is covered over with a library bookplate from the Redemptorist Fathers of Galway (ink stamp of the same on the front free endpaper). Occasional foxing. Some underlining. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Book.
