Book
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. illustrated with twelvwe gravures by zhenya Gay (illustrator). In original slipcase (very-good-minus), in marbled green to match the boards. NO dust jacket, as issued. This is the original text as it appeared in The London Magazine of September and October, 1821 -- not as revised and rewritten in 1856. Laid in is the appropriate issue "1p" of the Heritage Club monthly newsletter "Sandglass," as well as an invoice for $3.90 (to include 25 cents "Wrapping & Carrying Charge") for this book, which appears to have gone unpaid. One imagines that the use of opium (here in the form of laudanum) is -- certainly in the early stages -- enjoyable, else why start? Yet Zhenya Gay's somber charcoal illustrations are -- start to finish -- hellish and harrowing. Never a smile, never a dream of bright dragons. 77 pp. Reduced from $15.

The Opium~Eater was De Quincey's first important work and, in substantially revised form, was also his last. Reading the book today one is less concerned with De Quincey's taking of opium than with the unveiling of the shadowy dream world of the subconscious which this act is said to have made possible. De Quincey stated that the effects of the drug were much preferable to those of alcoholic intoxication: 'The opiumeater . feels that the diviner part of his nature is paramount~that is, the moral affections are in a state of cloudless serenity: and high over all the great light of the majestic intellect.' And the 'majestic intellect' is the real subject of the Confessions.
