Times obituary reads: "APPLETON--William W., son of William Henry Appleton and Emily Noel Johnston, died of cardiac arrest on June 7th, 2014 in Manhattan. Born on December 31, 1915 paternally related to a distinguished publishing family and maternally the great-grandson of the founder of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, he was educated at St. Bernard's, St. Mark's and Harvard '38. In 1940 he received an MA, in English Literature from Columbia. Drafted as a private in World War II, he was assigned to the first Radar school in the Pacific and remained in Hawaii until his discharge as a Master Sergeant in 1945. Immediately engaged as an Instructor in the Columbia English Department, he remained there for thirty years teaching various courses in the drama. In 1975, he retired as a Professor Emeritus. During this period he wrote and edited a number of books dealing with the theatre. He was an extensive traveler and spent much of his time in England. He also served as a volunteer in the Berg Collection in the New York Public Library and the Theatre Research Library at Lincoln Center as a collaborating curator in a number of their exhibitions. He is survived by his sister, Tina A. Bishop and four nephews, Peter A. Hendricks, Erik Hendricks, Mark S. Newcombe, Lawrence A. Newcombe, two grandnephews and two grandnieces. Interment private in Greenwich, Connecticut. -The New York Times, June 15, 2014 in exceptionally good condition.
