In-8, demi-chagrin à coins brun très frotté, dos à nerfs, exemplaire sorti des collections du Metropolitan Museum of arts de New-York (insigne en queue), coins émoussés, Paris, Clémence, 1868 & Paris, 1869-1875, 278 + 223 pp. En 1867, Napoléon III envoie des délégations d'ouvriers relieurs promouvoir la reliure française lors de l'exposition universelle de Paris. L'histoire a retenu que l'Internationale ouvrière a largement bénéficié de ces rassemblements et a retenu en particulier le rôle d'Eugène Varlin, ouvrier relieur. Celui-ci présidait l'assemblée générale de la société de Crédit mutuel des ouvriers relieurs tenue le 13 avril 1867. Au cours de cette assemblée générale fut affirmé comme « principe fondamental : l'affranchissement des travailleurs par les travailleurs eux-mêmes. » Tout patronage d'une société d'encouragements était refusé ainsi que l'acceptation de fonds étrangers à la corporation.

Elu à la tête des cinq délégués relieurs à l'exposition universelle de 1867, Eugène Varlin (militant socialiste, membre de la Commune de Paris et de la Première Internationale) participa à la rédaction de ce rapport en 1868, depuis la prison où il avait été incarcéré à la suite du deuxième procès de l'Internationale. Ses initiales figurent au bas de l'avant-propos du deuxième volume ("E.V.") aux côtés de la signature de V. Wynants. Parmi les autres membres de la délégation des relieurs parisiens à l'Exposition universelle: Adolphe Clémence, petit-fils d'un membre de la conjuration des Égaux, un des fondateurs de l'Internationale, futur acteur de la Commune qui assura la distribution du premier volume, Jean-Pierre Leclère, Alphonse Delacour, E. Paillet et Victor Wynants. Ce dernier participa à la commission qui, en 1875, fit paraître le deuxième volume du rapport. Varlin était mort entre temps. Cf. M.
