This book describes a very complex operation namely the almost doubling of normal weekday services to cater for the 'Summer Saturday' specials run by British Railways Western Region. It concentrates on one particular weekend (9 July 1960) and gives the movements of almost every engine that was on duty on the lead-up and the weekend in question. This was before the overseas package holiday and tens of thousands flocked to the southwest for their annual holidays, many of whom undertook 12 hour plus journeys from the north of England to the southwest.
