Mass Market Paperback. Condition: Good. First Thus. Softcover, 192 pp. 1st Signet Printing, May 1969, Q3871, 95 cents cover price. Moderate wear, small tear at heel of spine, small chip on edge of first leaf, last page with a "doodle" on bottom margin, no owner names or gift notes, clean text, tight binding. "A black football player tells what it means to escape from Mississippi to a Northern campus. A Southern shoe salesman declares he will never bend down to put shoes on Nigra feet. A young black bitterly denounces the prejudice of his lighter skinned brothers. A barber describes a Klan meeting as though it were a family outing. These are but a few of the voices memorably recorded by Erskine Caldwell [1903-1987] as he traveled, looked, asked questions and, above all, listened in every corner of the Southland.".

Hardcover. First edition, not stated. 257 pgs., 8vo. Caldwell, in older age, returns to the South he grew up in, and reflects on the changes, and the core, of that region. His remarks and stories about the early days are particularly fine, and he blends a journalistic style with his natural gift of storytelling to give us a unique perspective on his home area, and its people. Very good condition in damaged dust jacket, with a 2" piece missing at the top of the front panel, not affecting the title and author print.

Book
Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good +. Second Printing. F/F/1st ed; 2nd printing. I have to say right up front that I've never cared for Erskine Caldwell's writings. I think he mostly paints southerners in an unsympathic light, for all that he grown up in Georgia, he does'nt seem like a southerner. He points out our rough spots, while neglecting the good. This book was written in 1966. Some things have changed, some have not. This book is mostly about religion throughout the South, in all social spheres, in all education brackets. Part one was published in England under the title"In the Shadow of the Steeple" Part II, "AT the other end of Town" is published in this volume for the first time. Book Condition is Fine; blue cloth over boards with white lettering on spine. 257pp. First Edition, second printing. Book is clean, tight and square. No writing or markings. Dust Jacket Condition is Very Good+; glossy jacket with no nicks or tears. Has been price clipped. Jacket is covered with a removable mylar dust jacket.
