Seller: Parrish Books, Sandy, OR, U.S.A.
First Edition
Condition: UNSPECIFIED. W.W. Denslow (illustrator). First Edition, thus. Same date on both the title page and copyright page (1902) with G.W. Dillingham as publisher. The book is in overall Very Good condition (with the illustrations themselves quite crisp). This title is often seen as a collectible for an antiquarian library/collector. G.W. Dillingham was a notable publishing house for a number of their publications, including the First American and First English edition of Les Miserables by Victor Hugo. Denslow's monumental success due to his work with "Oz" and "Father Goose" along with his editorials about politics make his first editions historical collectibles. Please see photographs for additional reference points as well as more specifics about the condition: Slight looseness in binding at midpoint of book when open; some slight gap showing front board hinge when opened to the paste down page and first fly leaf. Foxing/slight discoloration and some soiling but the pages are still quite clean and the illustrations incredibly bright. One page shows a dog eared corner and another a closed tear that doesn't seem to open when the page is turned. Book is still well bound, clean and with very bright illustrations. It's quite impressive to see how sharp and crisp the colors are considering these editions were printed prior to a digital age (1902); as though the colors have not aged with the passage of time. Missing 1 page(s) (Fly leaf opposite front paste down). Presents as a copy still appropriate for actual reading. Some small instances of pencil marking/writing from previous owner on paste down pages and fly leaves, but clean and neat. The spine is still present however only the linen is present as the title and red panel have worn away; the spine is still strongly in tact. Slight roll over/lean to the right. Binding looser towards foot of spine on some pages, but still allows for turning of pages/reading if the collector would like to do so. This is not the 1902 Donohue & Co, Chicago edition or a reprint. Nearly 200 years ago Clement C. Moore, professor of classics, wrote a holiday poem, "A Visit from St. Nicolas" to amuse his children during the holidays. It gained international popularity and was often referred to as "Twas the Night before Christmas," it's opening lines. The illustrator, W.W. Denslow, became widely known for his work with "Oz" and "Father Goose." He worked closely with L. Frank Baum and illustrated "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz," as well as a number of other books published by Baum.
