Published by Charles Williamson, New York, 1849
Seller: Carydale Books, Rhinebeck, NY, U.S.A.
Hardcover. Condition: Good -. Early Edition. octavo ca. 5.75" x 9" bound in brown stiff paper wraps. with earlier owner ink stamp name on front cover and various pencil and ink notes written on front cover. Earlier version was published ca. 1804 which had one map, this has 2- with one at the back dated 1809. This copy was clearly excised from a larger work as the page numbers run (approximately) 1169 - 1188, The words "papers Relating to Western New York" appear on some pages ( there were republications of historical works done in New York - undoubtedly, this was one of those) Front map shows the county- nearly the same as in the 1804 version, while the second map at the rear shows western New York state and Canada all around Lake Ontario. Contents pp. 20 of title and text plus front map and rear map plus one b&w engraving showing the Port of Buffalo- which is dated 1815 - this plate is heavily foxed. The two maps are also foxed- one much less than the other. Pages are age toned. Overall, binding is nothing special, contents not quite good, and a scarce item. Howes W493. The date 1849 is given on the front cover by earlier owner- latest date noted inside is 1815 on the plate of Buffalo, but the page numbering indicates this was taken from a larger volume which may have been published in 1849. Text in English. Note: due to size and weight, shipping outside the USA may cost about that of an average book.

[20]pp. plus frontispiece map. Contemporary half leather and paper boards. Minor shelf wear. Slightly tanned. Very good. Mid-19th-century reprint of an interesting and very scarce promotional 1804 edition for the Pulteney Estate in Western New York, issued by the promoters of the region, the English Associates. The first edition, which is quite rare, appeared in 1798, with a subsequent printing appearing in 1799. Howes records three printings in 1804, of which only one contained a map, which is reproduced here. These guide books were utilized by the prospective settlers, and often discarded after they arrived at their new homes. HOWES W493. REESE, FEDERAL HUNDRED 74 (ref).
