Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Eighteenth Impression. Antique cookbook in very good minus condition . First edition, published in 1890, and quite scarce, especially in this condition. Ten and a quarter inch quarto with brown leather covered boards printed in faded gilt on the cover and faded, almost invisible gilt on the spine, with title only in a curved elegant script. The front cover is fairly well preserved with some scratches and dulling, worn corners and spine tips, the back cover has several scratches in the thin leather covering and worn corners. The 'boards' in this case may be a very accurate description because, though they can't be seen, they are extremely hard and stiff, and actually sound like wooden boards when knocked on. Several free front end papers, followed by a colored frontis piece illustration of an 1890's dining room, with a partial tissue protector sheet. Marbled top edge, though the marbling is faint and faded now. The pages are tanned on the edges and slightly brittle , with a couple of chips here and there. All in all, this book is in remarkably good condition and is still very clean, square, intact and complete with a nice tight binding. Lengthy table of contents including chapters on food tips, Perfumes and toilet recipes, chapter on knowing when food is in season, roasting woodcocks, and how to make yeast. Several hand written recipes laid between pages here and there. "Containing the Choicest Original and Selected Recipes for Economical and Practical Housekeeping. 527 pp.
