Softcover. Condition: Good. Rose Wilder Lane an American journalist, travel writer, novelist, and political theorist, lived from 1886 until 1968. She was the daughter of Laura Ingalls Wilder, and widely considered a silent collaborator on the Little House series. She is noted ? with Ayn Rand and Isabel Paterson ? as one of the founding mothers of the American libertarian movement. This is her non-fiction book (1943), one that had a huge impact on American libertarian thought in the 20th century. Here we have an eloquent hymn to human energy and its creative power. Her prose is stark and strong, the product of decades of experience in attempting to get readers to listen, and succeeding.

First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. 1st Edition. This is a first edition of one of the founding classics of modern Libertarianism (along with Ayn Rand's "The Fountainhead" and Isabel Paterson's "The God of the Machine"), identified as the first printing by its 1943 copyright and lack of any mention of later impressions. (In fact, the book was not reprinted until 1971.) The text block of this book remains undamaged and "very good," but at some point the front board -- and the bottom inch of the rear board -- got wet. As a result, the cloth-covered boards are now mottled, and some of the red dye from the front board has noticeably transferred to the jacket front panel. Book does NOT smell musty. Damage to boards and front panel of the jacket reflected in our pricing of what would normally be a thousand-dollar book. Additional, NON-authorial 1950 gift inscription to top of FFE. Jacket front flap is price-clipped. "War Bonds and Stamps" logo and ad to jacket rear flap. Rose Wilder Lane (1886-1968) was one of the highest paid writers in the United States during her days as a journalist, war correspondent, and novelist. The daughter of Laura Ingalls Wilder, she reorganized, edited, and is widely considered to have been a silent collaborator on her mother's "Little House" series. "The Discovery of Freedom" is her eloquent hymn to human energy and its creative power, explaining that what made America uniquely prosperous and a shining light to all mankind was, simply, freedom -- the fact that the individual was permitted freedom from the crippling, enervating shackles of command, control, confiscation, and redistribution. "Why did men die of hunger, for six thousand years?" she asks. "Why did they walk, and carry goods and other men on their backs, for six thousand years, and suddenly, in one century, only on a sixth of this earth's surface, they make steamships, railroads, motors, airplanes, and now are flying around the earth in its utmost heights of air? Why did families live six thousand years in floorless hovels, without windows or chimneys, then, in eighty years and only in these United States, they are taking floors, chimneys, glass windows for granted, and regarding electric lights, porcelain toilets, and window screens as minimum necessities? . . . Why did this happen?" It wasn't "the welfare state." 262 pp. Reduced from $260.
