Hardcover. Condition: See Description. 1st Edition. Dvorak in Love A Light-Hearted Dream, Skvorecky, Josef. Published by Lester & Orpen Dennys, Toronto, 1986. First Canadian Edition. 8vo up to 9½" tall. 322 pages plus a chronology of events in Anton Dvorak¿s life. Black cloth boards with gilt spine titles. Rubbing to board edges and light toning to page edges and otherwise fine. Unclipped jacket has light shelf wear. In 1892, at the height of his prodigious powers, Antonin Dvorak was persuaded to leave his native Bohemia to come to New York to be director of the National Conservatory for Music. In this exuberant novel, Josef Skvorecky tells the story of Dvorak¿s utterly requited love affair with young America, the anthem of which is his famous Symphony in E Minor, ¿From the New World.¿ Josef ¿kvorecký, CM (1924-2012) was a Czech-Canadian writer, editor, publisher and professor. His first 2 novels, The End of the Nylon Age (1956) and The Cowards (1958, tr 1970) were promptly banned, and he lost his position as editor of World Literature in a 1958 purge of intellectuals. After the 1968 Soviet invasion, Skvorecky and his wife, the actress-novelist Zdena Salivarova, moved to Canada.
