Swift Newton; facsimiles of newspaper articles and letter written in handwriting by A. Edward Newton; "The Age of Newton" by A.S. W. Rosenbach; "King of Bibliophiles," by Margaret Williamson; "An American Book Collector" by Randolph Greenfield Adams; other tributes; and a "Catalogues" section with lengthy listing of items for sale on each date. Binding is firm; pictorial label on front board is flawless; light blue boards have some sunning at upper and lower edges and light bumping of corners, in absence of any d.j. The spine, however, is quite faded and abraded, with faint stain reaching portion of front board.

Hardcover book and original dust jacket detailing the public exhibition and sale of A. Edward Newton's book collection on April 16 - April 18, 1941, following the famous book collector's death. This book comprises Part One of the sale (books with authors last names beginning with A - D). Book is blue-gray paper covered boards with black lettering on cover and spine. One inch chip to paper at top spine edge, wear and short closed tear at bottom spine edge. Clean book, binding is tight, no cracking. Pages and edges are clean. Beautiful black and white photographic endpapers (Newston reading in his lovely library in front of book; exterior photograph of Oak Knoll - his home - on rear endpapers). Frontispiece photo portrait of Newton. Book includes many images from items offered in the sale, including some in full color with tissue guards. Only markings in book are a few "price realized" numbers noted in soft pencil in margins. 230 pages. Dust jacket has edge chips and closed tears, but is quite clean and has a terrific photo of Newton standing in front of his book cases on front panel. Enclosed in new archival quality removable mylar cover. Offers many great details in description of rare books by prominent authors offered for sale during the dispersal of this famous collection.

This is the auction catalog for Part One of the famous sale of the library of A. Edward Newton, Parke-Bernet Galleries Sale No. 276, held in New York on April 16, 17, and 18, 1941. This Part was comprised of authors whose last names began with the letters A-D and occupied four auction sessions over a period of three days, and included 584 lots. Also included are two contemporary newspaper clippings reporting on the sale, which included an important collection of works by William Blake. . Sessions 1 and 2 includes a former owner's pencilled notes of the prices at which each lot was sold and the name of the buyer.
