Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Early, important primer published in 1812 on the nascent science of chemistry by the most important practitioner of the times, Humphry Davy. Davy can rightly be called the first "professional chemist," famous for his discoveries and popular lectures on the subject at London's Royal Institution of Great Britain where he was a key, early hire to the staff in 1802. While Davy is highly regarded for his pioneering experiments in electro-chemistry, he is best remembered for his invention of the coal-miner's safety lamp in 1815 which saved countless lives during a rash of deep-mine methane explosions (see my other listing for his book on the safety lamp). In 1813, Davy hired a young unknown as his lab assistant at the Royal Institution. Michael Faraday was to work and live on the Royal Institution premises until 1864 while becoming one of history's greatest physicists/chemists. His researches on electricity earned him the title,"father of the electrical age." Book condition: Very good in the original publisher's boards, edges all untrimmed. Nicely re-backed with original spine label saved. Binding is very solid. Complete with dedication page (to Lady Davy), errata page, table of contents, "advertisement," introduction, and appendix with twelve plates - all free of foxing; missing the front blank leaf. A scarce title in this original condition.
