Hardbound 12mo (7.25 inches tall) 342 pages + ads. Bibliography. Rockwell Kent endpapers. Description: This is book number 212 in the Modern Library series. The only printed date is the 1918 copyright. Dating by the ML guide, this is from Spring 1967. The titles printed on the verso of the dust jacket include Faulkner, As I Lay Dying, but do not include Faulkner, Pylon. Dust jacket rear panel style i; binding style 10. Originally published in 1918, Lytton Strachey's barbed prose removed four Victorian heroes from their pedestals, revealing the real figures -- sometimes flawed, and occasionally unattractive. He chose four figures through whom to explore the dynamics of the Victorian era. All four were deeply religious, channeling keen personal ambition through ideals of service and duty. All four had become figures of popular veneration, whose legends showed the prejudices, hopes and follies of the Victorians writ large. The lives of Cardinal Manning, Florence Nightingale, Dr Arnold and General Gordon provided Strachey with rich material from which to shape his elegant, skeptical essays. BINDING/CONDITION: blue cloth with torchbearer logo blind stamped on the front cover; gilt spine text; owner's name on the verso of the front endpaper; a Good book, with a Good dust jacket; publisher's price on the jacket flap is intact. ISBN: B004WOEXO4.
