First Edition
Hardcover (Original Cloth). Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. Book Club Edition. Readers Union Book Club Edition; 269 pages, illustrated 8 b/w photographs, double page map in text. Original covers in unclipped dust jacket. Shelf wear, dust jacket spotted, missing some pieces and rear flap of original dust jacket missing, additional photocopied dust jacket also supplied with the book. Covers faded where dust jacket has pieces missing, contents clean. Ernest Shackleton's third Antarctic expedition sailed from London. His ship was the Endurance, but little did her complement know that their own Endurance would be tested to the full after the ship was trapped in the ice in the Weddell Sea late in 1915 and had to be abandoned. This was the beginning of a struggle for survival, with 28 men with three small boats striking out by sledge and boat across the hazardous Weddel Sea for Elephant Island. Their journey took from Christmas 1915 to April 1916. From the island Shackleton, with a crew of five others, left on April 24 to sail one of the small boats to South Georgia, which they reached on May 10. This has become one of the epic small boat voyages of all time, but it was to be the end of August before the remaining survivors could be rescued from Elephant Island. A remarkable story of beating all the odds. First edition of the work in this format and binding, and/or set or series. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilogram. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 1959 USA HARDCOVER. The copyright page has "FIRST EDITION" printed on it, but this is a Book Of The Month Club printing. Rosove's excellent bibliography indicates this is the first US edition, there being no other 1959 USA editions noted. This book has a dimple in the lower inside corner of the rear cover which indicates it is a Book Of The Month publication. However, I once had a McGraw-Hill first USA edition 1959 that did not have a dimple on the rear cover corner and had a dust jacket with a different rear panel and had the publisher's price printed on the flap corner. The Book Of The Month Club version does not have a price printed on the flap corner of the dust jacket. Original navy covers and spine with teal colored outside areas of front and rear cover, silver lettering spine. The book has clean covers, very minor rubbing extreme tips corners, a little light foxing on EPs, no foxing on pages, no previous owner marks or writing on any pages, solid binding. The original dust jacket has rubbing and minor loss at tips of corners, 2cm tear upper rear near flap fold, clipped top front flap corner removing Book Of The Month Club blurb. The book measures 218mm tall x 140mm, 282pp, EP map, 17 b/w photos. PHOTOS ARE OF THE ACTUAL BOOK BEING OFFERED.

In the publisher's first state dust jacket, $5.00 on front flap, short closed tear at heel of spine, light sunning to spine, blemish to front panel, a very good example. (Rosove 195, A1) An exceptionally scarce work, with no verified copies of the first printing appearing at auction in the last 25 years. The first edition of Endurance by Alfred Lansing was published by McGraw-Hill Book Company of New York in 1959. It is often confused with the Book Club edition, released the same year. The first edition from McGraw-Hill states "first edition" on the copyright, has a retail price of $5.00 on the front flap, with "Book-of-The-Month Club Selection" printed below the retail price. The rear panel of the dust jacket has a photograph of Alfred Lansing, with a short biography. The second state dust jacket has a retail price of $6.95, with 9 advertising blurbs on the rear panel. The "Book of the Month Club" has "first edition" stated on the copyright page, but has a dimple on the back panel in place of the "36352" publisher's code.
