Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The English Mail-Coach is an essay by the English author Thomas De Quincey. A "three-part masterpiece" and one of his most magnificent works. The essay is divided into three sections: Part I, "The Glory of Motion," is devoted to a lavish description of the mail coach system then in use in England, and the sensations of riding on the outside upper seats of the coaches; Part II, "The Vision of Sudden Death," deals in great detail with a near-accident that occurred one night while De Quincey, intoxicated with opium, was riding on an outside seat of a mail coach; Part III, Part III, "Dream Fugue, Founded on the Preceding Theme of Sudden Death". Thomas de Quincey was born in Manchester on the 15th of August, 1785. His father was a man of high character and great taste for literature as well as a successful man of business; he died, most unfortunately, when Thomas was quite young. Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is a vibrant and lively account of a time when travel was glorious and perilous, the post was delivered by coach, and the author was young and fearless. During a bygone era, the author embarked on his adventures across England. Through a series of anecdotes that are both rife with comedy and rich in history, the author brings to life a vanished era of travel and adventure. The book is an exploration of the grandeur and romance of the English mail coach system, and through the eyes of the author, we get a sense of what it was like to make these eventful journeys, all the while immersed within the heart of the Napoleonic conflicts when news of the latest battles and victories arrived. In this remarkable autobiography, Thomas De Quincey hauntingly describes the surreal visions and hallucinatory nocturnal wanderings he took through London and the nightmares, despair, and paranoia to which he became prey under the influence of the then-legal painkiller laudanum. Forging a link between artistic self-expression and addiction, Confessions seamlessly weaves the effects of drugs and the nature of dreams, memory, and imagination. First published in 1821, it paved the way for later generations of literary drug users, from Baudelaire to Burroughs, and anticipated psychoanalysis with its insights into the subconscious.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book juxtaposes three classic essays by famed English author, Thomas De Quincey: Joan of Arc, The English Mail-Coach, and The Spanish Military Nun. In Joan of Arc, De Quincey offers an insightful portrayal of the titular historical figure, exploring her rise, fall, and legacy. The English Mail-Coach presents a rich tapestry of vivid imagery as the author recounts a stagecoach journey, offering reflections on life, death, and the passage of time. The Spanish Military Nun delves into the extraordinary life and adventures of Catalina de Erauso, a woman who disguised herself as a man to fight in the Spanish army. Throughout these essays, De Quincey's masterful prose and keen observations captivate and provoke introspection. His exploration of themes such as heroism, sacrifice, and the human condition offers profound insights into the complexities of human existence.
