Freundlichen Gruss und herzlichen Dank für Ihre Zuschrift zu meinem Ehrentage! Rudolf Virchow". First Print! "In Remembrance. Pages of Thanks to my Fiends" "This article, aptly called by Erwin Ackerknecht Virchow's "Testament" (RVSDSA, 30-33), is dated December 15, 1901, just twenty days before the street accident that brought his career to an end. Virchow wrote it to thank all those physicians, anthropologists, archaeologists, and others who had participated on October 13, 1901, in the worldwide celebration of his eightieth birthday. From Russia alone, where, Virchow writes, "I had perhaps the largest number of pupils among physicians," greetings arrived from medical, anthropologies, geographical, and historical societies in no less than forty-two towns and cities. Several passages from the article are translated in Ackerknecht s book on Virchow, including the following: 'The course of my researches has not only brought several different countries and their inhabitants into the compass of my investigations, but . . . my studies have also dealt with medicine and the sciences, anthropology and archaeology, occasionally even with literature, philosophy, politics, and social structure. I did not bring about this mixture arbitrarily. Decisive for it was a mission on which I was sent by the Prussian minister of medical affairs early in 1848 . to survey the grave epidemic of so-called famine typhus in Upper Silesia. In analyzing the causes of this epidemic I became convinced that the worst were the consequence of social evils, and that these evils could be fought only by ways of deep going social reforms. . I want once more to recall to memory that it is unavoidable to relate practical medicine and political legislation'." Rathert Rudolf Ludwig Karl Virchow (1821-1902) pathologist, pathological anatomist anthropologist, prehistorian and politician. Rathert No. 838.
