Book
Softcover. pale yellow-green glossy wraps w/ green printing. 261 pgs w/ bw illustrations. A nice, sharp copy. "An era of great agricultural expansion in America, the nineteenth century witnessed the development of capitalist method, technological innovation, scientific experimentation, and the reorganization of social and family life -- changes that were reflected in striking transformations in the vernacular landscape. In this fascinating interdisciplinary study, Sally McMurry examines one arena of domestic change -- the design of northern rural farmhouses -- as an index of America's shift from an agrarian society to an urban, industrial nation. Drawing on myriad sources, McMurry shows how the farmhouse of the 1830s and 1840s -- a social and conceptual whole that integrated work, family, and leisure space -- gave way to a collection of rooms that filtered people by age, class, and sex, as well as by type of activity. Kitchens became isolated; rooms for farmhands were segregated or eliminated; separate bedrooms were assigned to children and adolescents. At the same time, the formal parlor was abandoned in favor of the open, multi-purpose sitting room, an attempt to maintain distinctly rural patterns of social life. For this paperback edition, McMurry has written a new introduction that summarizes the scholarship done in the field since the book's initial publication in 1988."--Amazon. VG (light wear to wraps & corners. small indenation to spine top. very tightly bound; likely unread).

Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. This lively interpretation of the changing design of US farmhouses during the 19th century is founded on owner-designed farmhouse plans from the East and Midwest, which are complemented by letters, biographical data, and over one hundred illustrations. In explaining how these transformations reflected changing aspirations and social and economic conditions , focusing on the eventual segregation of male and female domains, this study offers important new insightsinto the nature of American vernacular architecture and its role in US social history. Farmhouse plans designed by 19th-century rural American men and women are vital indicators of the work patterns, social interactions, and cultural values of the era. This study demonstrates the ingenious ways in which Americans designed farmhouses in keeping with their vision of a dynamic, reformed culture. Shipping may be from our Sydney, NSW warehouse or from our UK or US warehouse, depending on stock availability.
